Greetings to UM friends, colleagues, and students. It has been almost a year since
I retired from the University of Mississippi. I have spent most of this time staying
in northern Virginia, where my two little granddaughters live. It has been
quite rewarding to be part of their young lives.
My older son lives in Jersey City, NJ. In March 2006, he and his wife became the parents
of a son, Daniel. I have spent a lot of time visiting them also. Daniel is now
a cute and robust little guy, just learning to crawl and to sit up by himself.
In October 2006, my mother (who had been living in Florida for many years) passed
away, apparently quite peacefully at the end of a long and happy life.
Some people who view this page may remember that I announced at a "farewell" event
last fall that my major post-retirement goal was to run a marathon. That goal
has not been achieved yet, and seems still rather distant. But I have done a
great deal of jogging since last winter. Thanks to Google's "pedometer" app, it
is pretty easy to measure the exact distance or length for any run, so I have kept quite
detailed records of all of my running exercise. Since February 2006, I have
run over 700 miles. But the longest individual run has been 12 miles, so the
26.2 mile distance of a marathon still seems an elusive goal. Wish me luck.
(Regardless of the marathon idea, I feel great as a result of getting lots of
vigorous outdoor exercise.)
Best wishes to everyone. Email sbs@olemiss.edu
or sbs304@yahoo.com to let me know how
you are doing.

I would like to thank everyone who came to the retirement
reception on Nov 30 and who participated in the card and gift
that were given to me. It was exciting and unexpected also
to receive my
official University of Mississippi retirement
watch.
I deeply appreciate the kind sentiments that all of you
expressed. I'm going to miss the CS department a great deal,
but I am sure that the department is in good hands, with
a great bunch of students and excellent faculty and staff.
Students, faculty, and everyone associated with the department
have a great future ahead. Good luck with your part
in that future!
Mr. Arvinder Kang was one of the grad students who attended
this event. He took some photos, and has
gone to the trouble of putting together an
album of photos of the retirement reception
and other UM campus scenes.
Thanks very much!

I filled out the final paperwork to retire from the University
of Mississippi on October 25, 2005.
To the best of my knowledge, I am the second CIS department
faculty member who stayed around long enough to retire. (Dr. Charles
Evans retired several years ago.)
Oct. 25 was far enough in advance that the CIS department could
expand its existing search committee to begin
recruitment of two new faculty members (for departing Dr. Fan and
myself) for the fall semester of 2006.
In the meantime, a
search is underway to find a temporary instructor for the spring
semester of 2006. Students in the department can look forward
to the excitement of seeing some new faces in the ranks of
the department's teachers.
Students who are enrolling for spring
semester classes should check
the CIS department's course listing
for changes and updates to the courses and teachers for the spring
semester. Or, inquire at the CIS department office in Weir (915-7396).
Please feel free to get in touch with me at

to let me know how you are doing, or if you need a reference
letter or anything of the sort. I will be happy to hear from
you!
