Data Science: The big-data revolution and opportunities in Translational and Precision Medicine

Abstract: Data science is an emerging field encompassing processes and systems for extracting knowledge and insights from data. It tackles the challenges of big data, real-time analytics, data modeling and visualization. Computer and information science uses a high-throughput computational method to extract and explore information from heterogeneous, unstructured, high dimensional dataset in an effective way. The marriage of data science and computer science will enable the creation and application of powerful new methods to collect, curate, analyze, and make discoveries and decisions from large-scale data. The opportunities brought by the application in the biomedical area will benefit the population health with precision medicine.

Bio: Dr. Yunyun Zhou is an assistant professor of the Data Science department of the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Her research areas are Biomedical database and web portal development, Machine learning application on biomedical data, Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, and Biostatistics. She has completed her Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Washington State University (Pullman, WA) in 2012.
