Modeling Associative Memory: Evidence from Database Mining
3:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2009
Weir Hall, Room 235
Dr. Erin Buchanan
Assistant Professor
Department of Psychology
University of Mississippi
Abstract:
This talk will explore the use of computers and databases to understand language processing and its interaction with memory. Connectionist models of semantic memory
are programmed to examine the relationships between words and their dictionary meanings, but the actual /use/ of language has been ignored in these models. However, many
databases concerning both dictionary knowledge and associative language use have been collected. What do these databases tell us about the placement of associative
memory into a computer model of language? A new model of memory storage will be discussed using these databases and findings from how people measure up to model
predictions.
Dr. Buchanan is an Assistant Professor in the UM Department of Psychology, specializing in Cognitive Psychology. Her research interests include Psycholinguistics and
Memory.
