Abstract:

Industries as diverse as video games, manufacturing, and Hollywood film-making, are all increasingly dependent on 3D data. I will review the state of the art in one of the lower-cost forms of 3D surface acquisition: structured light. In structured light a real-world scene is augmented with data via a projector, making automatic 3D reconstruction feasible. Traditionally, these techniques have focused on producing recognizable features via projection. I will also present an alternative technique, under development at the University of Alabama, which does not focus on recognition task. Instead, it uses statistical properties to aid in reconstruction.
