Welcome

Welcome!

The faculty and staff of the Department of Computer and Information Science within the School of Engineering at The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) are glad that you have taken the time to visit our web site. We offer exciting and innovative undergraduate and graduate programs on the beautiful campus of the University of Mississippi in historic Oxford, Mississippi. Surrounded by beautiful tree-lined horizons and nestled in a valley in North Mississippi, we are breaking new ground in computer science education and research.

The Department has entered a new era in the past eight years. We have moved into a renovated Weir Memorial Hall, which we share with the University's Galtney Center for Academic Computing and the Office of Information Technology. We have two technologically equipped classrooms and three computer laboratories dedicated to our program. We have added new faculty members to our solid base of experienced faculty. We have also developed new courses on important topics such as graphics, image processing, animation, robotics, bioinformatics, computational biology, virtualization, web programming, multiparadigm programming, and parallel programming. Thanks to the many generous gifts of former students, we continue to offer exciting opportunities for our current and future students. The million-dollar Adler Endowment enables us to maintain up-to-date student computer laboratories and departmental servers. One exciting new system installed added in recent years is the Pepper Patch virtualization cluster, a parallel processing system with 36 processing cores and a special graphics processing unit. The Department of Computer and Information Science, an academic unit of the School of Engineering, offers four academic programs in computer science:

See the Future Students page for more information about admission to our academic programs. Each of our undergraduate degree programs is intense, but the reward upon graduation is significant. Computer Science graduates enter the workforce with a strong background in computer science and are, hence, highly competitive for good jobs. Their Ole Miss educations prepare them for career paths leading to positions with technical and managerial responsibilities. The graduates have excellent opportunities for meaningful, well-paying jobs in Mississippi, in the surrounding region, and across the country. They also have opportunities for graduate study at top institutions. Our MS and PhD students receive valuable experience within our research fields and also leave highly competent and able to compete effectively in the job market. Some of the recent employers of our graduates are Acxiom Corporation, International Paper, Wal-Mart Information Systems and Federal Express. Several universities and junior colleges have taken advantage of our superior graduates to teach in their fields of study. The Department has a growing research program. Research areas include software architecture and engineering, programming methodologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, bioinformatics, distributed systems, open source software, and educational applications of computing. As we add new faculty members our research areas will extend to new areas. The Department has a wide selection of hardware and software resources available to support its instructional and research programs. In addition, it sponsors two student organizations and other activities and provides several ways for its alumni to become involved. Again, we thank you for visiting our web site and encourage prospective students to call and to visit to the University. We are also available to answer questions you may have about our programs via telephone or email. Please feel free to contact us at any time.
